Who We Are

What We Do

Blog

Shibui Designs is a creative community of enterprising designers, business leaders, art educators and imaginative consumers who seek to support design through a unique for-profit/nonprofit collaboration with the goal of reinventing the way design and commerce work together.

We are a place for inspiration to thrive. A place where we design products but we also design ideas.

We have taken the fundamental principles of Shibui - simplicity, elegance and balance - as the starting blocks for all of our projects. Whether it is a candlestick for your table or a revitalized urban area of a metropolis everything at Shibui Designs has a function, a larger reason. Shibui is a place to contribute to and support the beauty and function of design and its creators. Simplicity, elegance and balance at the core of all that we do - We are Elaine Tajima, Joan Takayama-Ogawa, Randall Wilson, Tom Sandonato, John Maeda, Robert Apodaca and a growing number of established and emerging designers

Grass Gumball Machine - Common Studio
Common Studio is an emerging design practice and consultancy engaging in interdisciplinary approaches to objects, systems, tools, and spaces with an emphasis on issues of urban ecology, social enterprise, and adaptive reuse. Greenaid is the newest project from Commonstudio- It's an initiative that repurposes traditional gum ball machines to dispense "seedbombs." Shibui Designs Consulted with Daniel Phillips & Tim Karlsrud the founders of common studio and the dispensers are now located throughout los Angeles and have expanded to Northern California and to other states.

The Rise Desk - Michael Ponce
Shibui Designs is consulting with recent Otis graduate Michael Ponce on bringing his school desk concept to market. Most classrooms across the country are ideally designed to hold between 25-30 students. Unfortunately, because most public schools are so over populated, these same classrooms especially in urban areas) are stuffed with anywhere between 40-45 students. The concept seeks to alleviate the many associated problems with a well designed modular system which is also ideally suited for home use.
